of health services within a community. This medical specialty is concerned
with providing continuous and comprehensive care to all age groups, from
first patient contact to terminal care, with special emphasis on care of
the family as a unit.
A Family Medicine / Community Health nurse assesses patient health problems
and needs, develops and implements nursing care plans, and maintains medical
records. A Family Medicine / Community Health nurse typically administers
care to patients in an out patient or medical office environment.
A Family Medicine / Community Health nurse may advise patients on health
maintenance and disease prevention. Family Medicine / Community Health
nursing is practiced by nurses who have formal, post-secondary education
and who function in highly autonomous and specialized roles.
