Magnetic resonance imaging involves a special imaging technique used to image internal structures of the body. An MRI image is often superior to a plain film x-ray for viewing and understanding soft tissue structure. An MRI image is formed by a large magnet which polarizes hydrogen atoms in the tissues, provides a summation of the spinning energies within the tissues' cells and produces an image representation of this process.
MRI images are particularly good for examination of soft tissue, brain, spinal cord, joints and the abdomen. These scans may be used for detecting certain cancers and for monitoring their progression.
A MRI technologist typically administers MRI's to patients in an outpatient or radiology department setting.
