Midwives are healthcare providers who assist women during pregnancy with the preparation and act of childbirth. A midwife assesses women's pregnancy concerns and needs and provides prenatal care and advice. Midwives work in coordination with nurses and physicians providing prenatal and perinatal care.
Midwives typically provide care in the home or hospital setting. Midwifery is practiced by professionals who have formal, post-secondary education and who function in autonomous roles.
