A nurse working in general medicine has the ability to work within many different medical departments. A general medicine nurse has a broad base of medical knowledge applicable to a variety of medical fields including cardiology, pulmonary medicine, neurology, gastroenterology etc.
A general medicine nurse assesses patient health problems and needs, develops and implements nursing care plans, and maintains medical records. A general medicine nurse typically administers care to patients in an inpatient setting.
General medicine nursing is practiced by nurses who have specialized formal, post-secondary education and who function in highly autonomous and specialized roles.
